Key Characteristics
A large-bodied duck found nowhere else on the planet, the Philippine Duck wears its identity plainly: warm brown plumage, a rusty orange head, a dark cap, and a bold eyestripe running through the eye. Look closer and it rewards you, an iridescent speculum that flashes blue, green, or even purple depending on how the light hits it. Understated at rest, unmistakable in flight.
Habitat & Diet
This is a duck that goes where the water goes. During the rainy season, it nests on the ground in dense grassy vegetation near wetlands, exactly the kind of terrain many airfields maintain by default. It typically forages in canals and other fresh or brackish waterways, moves in small flocks, and can gather in groups of up to fifty. Fifty birds lifting off a runway margin at once is not a minor inconvenience; it's a potentially serious multiple strike hazard.

Its size alone makes any strike potentially damaging, and its flocking behavior multiplies that risk considerably.
